Biography

There is little data on the biography of Severino Catillo. Born at the end of the 19th century, in the 1910s he worked in the club system of Nacional as an administrator or “ranger” ( canchero ). It was Severino Castillo who found at 6 a.m. on March 5, 1918, at the Park Central stadium, the body of a football player Abdon Porte who committed suicide and his suicide note to President Jose Maria Delgado [1] .

Later, in 1919, Castillo was appointed head coach of the Uruguayan national team. Since a specialist with coaching experience was supposed to be in this position, it seems that Castillo was at some point in charge of Nacional, but no data was found on this either.

In 1919, Celeste went on to defend her title as South America's strongest national team in Rio de Janeiro. Uruguay won the first two championships of South America and was close to victory in the third tournament. The Uruguayans, like the Brazilians, defeated both of their rivals, Argentina and Chile , before the confrontation in the third round [2] . In the game with Chile (2: 0), a tragedy occurred - in one of the episodes, goalkeeper Roberto Cherie (whom Castillo put up for the game instead of the main goalkeeper Caetano Saporiti ) received a serious injury. Cherie had complications due to inguinal hernia , and he died in the hospital on May 30 [3] .

In the third game with the hosts of the championship, the Uruguayans led 2-0 by the 17th minute ( Isabelino Gradin and Carlos Scarone scored), but the Neko double allowed the Brazilians to equalize. A “golden match” was scheduled in which the audience saw a goal scored only in the third half added - Arthur Friedenreich scored in 122 minutes. It was the longest match in the history of the championships of South America and the Cup of America [2] , and Uruguay was defeated for the first time only in the third continental championship.

The last two games under the leadership of Severino Castillo Uruguay won against Argentina (2: 0 at home and 3: 1 away) - these were friendly matches played in 1920. Uruguay's coaching staff was then led by Ernesto Figoli .
