Biography
The birthplace, month and year of birth of the future artist remain exactly unknown. By tradition, they believe that he was born in the town of Busto Arsizio or in Milan at the end of the 16th century.
According to documents found, Daniele Crespi created four evangelists in the church of San Vittorio al Corso in Milan, dated 1619. Among the first works and paintings in the chapel of St. Anthony. The mastery of these works testified either to the imminent maturation of the artist’s talent, or to a good school of education and a significant talent of the artist.
The skill of the young artist was noticed, and he began to receive orders for portraits from wealthy church ministers, among whom Cardinal Federico Borromeo presided. So, for the new church of San Alessandro in Zebedia, he created the “Adoration of the Magi”, and for the chapel of John the Baptist, the altar was “The Execution of John the Baptist”. Daniele Crespi also includes the decoration of the Annunciation chapel in the church of Sant'Eustorgio to the early period of creativity.
Probably, with the assistance of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1621, Daniele Crespi was enrolled in the Academy of Ambrosian, founded by the cardinal under the direction of the artist Cherano (1573-1632). It is clear that he carefully looked at the works of reputable artists, among which were Italians (Camillo Pocaccini, Andrea de Ferrari, Pierre Francesco Mazzuccelli), and foreign artists (Rubens, Van Dyck).
In addition to biblical scenes, the artist turned to portraits, among them “Unknown Bearded Man” ( Isola Bella ), “Self Portrait” ( Uffizi Gallery , 1627), “Surgeon Eno Fioravanti” ( Castello Sforzesco ), Antonio Olgiati (Milan), Manfredo Settala ( Pinacoteca Ambrosiana ).
Among the best works of a mature period is a cycle of paintings for the church of Santa Maria della Passione, the second largest church in Milan after the Cathedral of Milan . Among them are “Christ and the angel”, “Crucifixion”, “Christ removed from the cross”, “St. Carlo Borromeo in the days of fasting. " The last picture was surprising asceticism and the artist’s desire to create the image of the saint as an example of Catholic virtues. The virtue of the original Christianity was also reminded of the picture created on the door for the organ of the church - "Christ washes the feet of the apostles."
The old artist still died in July 1630 during the plague in Milan.
