Biography
Born on October 27, 1914 in Beijing [1] .
He studied civil engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in 1932-1936 and in 1936 received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Jiaotong University (now Southwest Jiaotong University ). He went to the USA , where in 1937 he received a master 's degree in railway engineering at Cornell University . Under the influence of a visiting professor of economics, Fritz Mahlup turned to economics and in 1940 he was awarded a Ph.D. in economics at Cornell University . The topic of the dissertation was “Research on the theory of planning of an individual company in dynamic conditions” under the scientific supervision of Professor of Economics Donald English (12/27/1885 - 07/09/1974) [2] .
He began his research activities as an employee of the Brookings Institution in 1940-1941, and then was a consultant, deputy commercial adviser to the in 1941-1947. In 1944, he was a member of the Chinese delegation at the Bretton Woods Conference . In 1947 he returned to Beijing , taking the post of professor of economics at Tsinghua University in 1947-1948. At the end of 1948, he left China because of the civil war and moved to the United States , where he became an employee of the International Monetary Fund in 1948-1954. On the recommendation of Fritz Mahlup, he became professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University in 1954-1958. Then he was a full professor in 1958-1964, a professor at the Goldwin Smith department in 1964-1975 at Cornell University [2] .
Advised RAND Corporation , was a member of the Econometric Society , a committee of the Chinese economy, established [2] , along with another economist, Jiang Shojie , was an adviser to the Taiwan government in 1954 and in 1964, chairman of the Taiwan Tax Reform Commission in 1968-1970 years [3] .
Liu Dazhong committed double suicide with his wife on August 14, 1975 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer [4] .
Memory
In recognition at the University of Chicago, established the Dachung Liu Scholarship in 2014 [5] .
Rewards
July 2, 1970 - Order of the Diamond Star with a large second-class cordon from the Government of Taiwan [5] .
