Fighter Aviation Regiments during World War II

The participation of aviation regiments in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War is reflected in the lists developed by the Institute of Military History of the General Staff of the Armed Forces:

  • Air Force fighter aviation regiments that took part in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War are included in “List No. 12 of the Red Army Air Force regiments that were part of the Active Army during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” [2] .
  • Air defense fighter regiments that took part in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War are included in "List No. 11 of the formations, units and subunits of the country's air defense forces that were part of the field army during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" [3] .
  • fighter aviation regiments of long-range aviation that took part in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War are included in "List No. 9 of long-range aviation formations and units" [4] .
  • fighter aviation regiments of aviation of the Navy - in the corresponding lists of the Fleets [5] [6] [7] .

Types and Types

According to their affiliation, fighter aviation regiments are divided into:

  • fighter aviation regiments;
  • fighter air defense regiments;
  • long-range fighter aviation regiments;

According to their subordination, fighter aviation regiments are:

  • as part of aviation units ;
  • separate.

Composition

The aviation regiment consists of:

  • headquarters ;
  • several aviation squadrons (from one - two to 5-6), and the squadron consists of units ;
  • technical and operational parts (TEC);
  • company ( battalion ) of protection.

As a rule, a fighter aviation regiment is equipped with the same type of aircraft. In the air defense forces there were regiments armed with various types of aircraft, but the regiment was named after a regular fighter regiment [8] [9] [10] .

To ensure the combat operations of the aviation regiment, the operational control of the commander of the fighter regiment includes:

  • Battalion of airfield technical support (OBATO, BAO), as a rule - a separate battalion ;
  • The communications and radio flight support battalion (OBSiRTO), as a rule, is a separate battalion.

As part of

An aviation regiment, as a rule, is part of an aviation unit (a separate aviation regiment is part of a higher aviation unit or aviation association ). The exception was made by individual formations during the Great Patriotic War - the 11th mixed air corps (reorganized later into the 14th fighter air corps ). The corps was formed according to a new (as of 1942) management principle, which boiled down to the fact that all aviation regiments were directly subordinate to the corps command, bypassing the divisional authority. This was the only front-line aviation corps in the Great Patriotic War with such a control principle. This principle of management has not received further application.

In the Air Defense Forces of the country, an aviation regiment is part of a compound (a separate aviation regiment is part of an association) of an air defense. During the Great Patriotic War, all fighter air defense corps consisted of aviation regiments, bypassing the division link :

  • 6th Air Defense Fighter Corps - included up to 29 fighter aviation regiments;
  • 7th Air Defense Fighter Corps - included up to 15 fighter aviation regiments;
  • 8th Air Defense Fighter Corps - included up to 10 fighter aviation regiments;
  • 9th Air Defense Fighter Corps - included up to 12 fighter aviation regiments;
  • The 10th Air Defense Fighter Corps - included up to 10 fighter aviation regiments.
