Biography
After completing his studies at the School of the City of London, he began working in the family-owned company William Ritchie & Sons, which was engaged in trade with British India, as well as in the supply of jute and textiles.
In January 1874, he was first elected as a candidate member of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons, of which he was a member until 1905, representing the Tower of Hamlets district of London, and then Croydon. After the victory of the conservatives in the elections in the summer of 1885, he received appointments in the British government:
- 1885-1886 - Parliamentary Secretary of the Admiralty,
- 1886-1992 - Chairman of the Council on Local Government. This period saw the dissolution of the unpopular Metropolitan Board of Works due to the growing corruption in it and its replacement by the elected Council of the London County,
- 1895-1900 - Chairman of the Trade Council,
- 1900-1902 - Minister of Internal Affairs,
- 1902-1903 - Chancellor of the Exchequer of Great Britain.
After leaving the House of Commons in December 1905, King Edward VII was granted the hereditary title of Baron of Dundee and became a member of the House of Lords.
In 1902-1905 served as rector of the University of Aberdeen .
