Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd (DSME, cor. 대우 조선 해양 ) is a South Korean shipbuilding company. It ranks second in the ranking of the world's largest shipbuilding companies after Hyundai Heavy Industries [1] . Included in the "Big Three" shipbuilders of South Korea (along with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries ) [2] .

History

In 1973, Korea Shipbuilding & Engineering Corp. began construction of a shipyard in the city of Okpo-dong . In 1978, the unfinished shipyard was acquired by the newly created company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Heavy Machinery. In 1979, the shipyard built the first ship, a chemical tanker, but its official opening took place only in 1981, and the company received its first profit only in 1991.

In 1993, the company ranked first in the world in the number of orders. In the same year, the first submarine was built at the shipyard.

In 1994, the company merged with Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. In 1998, the shipyard built the first warship. In the same year, the first passenger ferries began to be exported.

In 2000, due to the financial crisis, the companies split up again, and a year later Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering opened a listing on the Korean Stock Exchange .

In 2005, the company built the world's first Regasification vessel Excelsior [3] ( LNG re-gasification vessel . LNG RV - English).

In 2007–2010, the company built for Qatar the world's largest LNG tankers of Q-Max and Q-Flex classes.

In 2013, the largest at that time container ship in the world, (18,000 TEU ), was built. In the same year, DSME won a tender for the construction of 16 ice class LNG tankers for the Yamal LNG project.

In 2015, another world's largest container ship was built - MSC Oscar (19224 TEU). [four]

Activity

The company manufactures passenger ships, gas carriers , regasification ships, large-capacity tankers for the transportation of crude oil, military ships, floating installations for the extraction, storage and offloading of oil ( Floating Production, Storage and Offloading. FPSO - English), semi-submersible drilling platforms , etc. [ 5] [6]
