South Hook Regasification LNG Terminal

Regasification terminal South Hook

The South Hook LNG terminal is located in the southwest of Wales , in the UK , near the city of Milford Haven . Designed for receiving liquefied natural gas (LNG) from gas tankers, its subsequent regasification and transmission to the South Wales gas pipeline. It is the largest LNG terminal in Europe.

History

ExxonMobil announced plans to build a regasification terminal at Milford Haven, one of the deepest harbors in the world, in April 2003. Construction began at the end of 2004, at the site where the Esso refinery was decommissioned in the late 1980s.

The first stage of the project included the construction of one berth, three tanks for storing LNG and eight evaporators for its regasification. During the second stage, another pier was built, two tanks, and seven evaporators.

The first phase was completed in October 2009. The second - in April 2010.

The terminal received the first LNG tanker on March 20, 2009. [one]

Technical Description

The terminal includes two berths for unloading LNG tankers up to the Q-Max type , five full-containment tanks for LNG storage, each with a volume of 155,000 thousand cubic meters, and a regasification unit consisting of fifteen SCV evaporators ( Combustion Evaporator Submerged Combustion Vaporiser These evaporators work due to gas combustion, as a result of which they consume up to 1.5% of raw materials for their own needs.

The terminal’s design capacity is 15.6 million tons of LNG per year (21 billion cubic meters of natural gas after regasification), which is one fifth of the UK’s natural gas needs. [one]

Owner

The terminal is owned by South Hook LNG Terminal Company Ltd. Ownership structure: Qatar Petroleum - 67.5%, ExxonMobil - 24.15% and Total - 8.35%. [2]

Commercial Operation

The South Hook Terminal is part of the integrated Qatargas -2 project. The main source of LNG for him is the gas liquefaction line No. 4 and No. 5 of this project. [3]

In May 2014, RasGas and E.ON made a deal for 2 billion cubic meters of gas, which should be delivered to IOG or South Hook terminals within four years. [4] This is the first time a Qatargas sister company has delivered its products to the UK market. Prior to this, the companies divided the markets among themselves, and did not trade on “foreign” territory.
