Regiment History and Combat Path
The 897th fighter aviation regiment began to form on May 15, 1942 at the 13th reserve fighter aviation regiment of the Volga Military District (Kuznetsk, Penza Region) in the state 015/174. He completed his formation on September 7, 1942 and was transferred to the 221st Bomber Aviation Division . He did not conduct combat work. In October he was sent to the 6th reserve fighter aviation regiment of the Volga Military District in the town of Rasskazovo, Tambov Region, where on October 15, 1942 it was reorganized according to the state 015/284 and on October 20 it was equipped with 32th Yak-7b fighters .
On October 28, 1942, the regiment began combat work as part of the 288th Fighter Aviation Division of the 1st Mixed Aviation Corps , which was subordinate to the headquarters of the 17th Air Army of the Southwestern Front.
The regiment's first known air victory in World War II was won on November 28, 1942: a pair of Yak-7b (lead senior lieutenant V. Kravchuk) in an air battle in the area north of the Khut. Lipovsky shot down a German heavy fighter Messerschmitt Bf . 110 .
From March 24 to May 3, 1943, the regiment as a part of the 288th fighter aviation division of the 10th mixed aviation corps was in the reserve of the SVKK in the Mikhailovsky district of Voronezh region. He did not conduct combat work, he was engaged in a combat training plan. Since April 25, the regiment left for the 16th reserve fighter aviation regiment of the Volga Military District at the Atkarsk airfield in the Saratov Region, where it was understaffed with Yak-1b aircraft until May 28. On June 5, 1943, the regiment resumed combat operations as part of the 288th Fighter Aviation Division of the 1st Mixed Aviation Corps of the 17th Air Army of the Southwestern Front on Yak-1 and Yak-7b aircraft. In October 1943, the Southwestern Front was renamed the 3rd Ukrainian Front. In December 1943, the regiment was reorganized to state 015/364 (aviation squadrons - 3; combat aircraft 40 (in command line - 4), training - 1, communications aircraft - 1), and in March 1944 fighters began to arrive in the regiment Yak-9 .
In May 1944, together with the 288th Fighter Aviation Division, it was removed from the 1st Mixed Aviation Corps to the headquarters of the 17th Air Army . From June 1 to August 19, the regiment did not conduct combat work, being engaged in a combat training plan. In March 1945, the regiment received the first Yak-3 and proceeded to their development. The regiment met Victory Day in Austria.

Post-War Regiment History
After the war, the regiment as part of the 288th Fighter Aviation Division became part of the 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Corps of the 17th Air Army of the Southern Group of Forces [3] [4] . In October 1947, a regiment consisting of the 288th Iad left the 3rd Guards Fighter Aviation Corps of the 17th Air Army of the Southern Group of Forces and relocated to the USSR, becoming part of the Air Force of the Kiev Military District. In February 1949, the regiment was renamed the 974th Fighter Aviation Regiment [5] . On March 2, 1959, the regiment was disbanded in the 138th fighter aviation division of the Kiev military district at Mirgorod airfield.

Honorary Names
On September 7, 1944, the 897th Fighter Aviation Regiment was awarded the honorary name "Chisinau" for the difference in battle during the breakthrough of the enemyβs defense south of Bender and for the capture of the city of Chisinau [7]
Rewards
The Chisinau 897th Fighter Aviation Regiment was awarded the Order of Suvorov of the 3rd Degree by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated September 16, 1944 for the exemplary performance of command assignments in battles with the German invaders, for the seizure of the cities of Brailov and Constanta .
