Biography and Activities

In 1720, he was appointed chief field marshal Menshikov to the army dragoon regiments as chief auditor , but soon, upon request, due to poor health, was dismissed from military service.

Profession

On May 9, 1722, at his own request, he was appointed to the place of Sofroniy Lihud a Greek language professor at the Moscow Hellenic-Greek Printing School with an annual salary of 150 rubles for tuition, 50 rubles for a reference book and 10 fathoms of wood, with the order “to have a diligent look at the students and send certain services from the Holy Synod . ” The aim of the school was to prepare from students, at least partially fluent in Greek and Latin, experienced book directors - proofreaders of liturgical literature. At first it was under the jurisdiction of the Monastic Prikaz, since 1711 it was under the jurisdiction of the Prikaz of books of printing, and in 1721 it was assigned to the newly established Synod with a printing house; in 1726, the rector of the Slavic-Latin Academy was entrusted with the management of the school, and it practically lost its independence, forming one of the three branches of the academy, again called Slavic-Greek-Latin .

List of Greek Manuscripts in Moscow

Having become a professor, Schiada first of all made a description of the Greek manuscripts of the Synodal library and printing house , on behalf of the Synod on the occasion of the forthcoming inspection of the Synodal library by the Duke of Holstein, Karl Friedrich, the bridegroom of Princess Anna Petrovna. The description was compiled and presented on January 4, 1723 to the emperor, who awarded the author and ordered to print. It was published in the same year in Moscow in 50 copies with a dedication to Peter the Great, in small 4, in 2 columns: on one - in Latin, on the other - in Russian (in civil letters), under the title : “ Catalogi duo codicum manuscriptorum graecorum, qui in Bibliotheca Synodali Moscvensi asservantur ... ” (“Two catalogs of Greek handwritten books found in the Synodal Library in Moscow ...”). Thanks to the order of 1722 to send “ curious ” manuscripts and books from all dioceses and monasteries to Moscow, the Synodal Library had at the disposal of Skiada quite a lot of lists from these manuscripts. The first catalog describes 50 books, in the 2nd - 304 and in the 3rd, in the form of additions, 93 books from the library of the Moscow Printing House . Of the shortcomings of the catalog, it is necessary to indicate the often incorrect designation of the time of writing the manuscript and the occasionally attributed attribution of various works, often in the same collection, to one author, and in general errors in the definition of the author. Errors are found when comparing at least with the catalog of Friedrich Mattei : “ Accurata codicum graecorum S. Synodi notitia et recensio ” (1805). However, the work of Skiad is important as the first serious attempt to notify part of a very valuable library and as the first experience of a systematic, separate description of Greek manuscripts, which served as a model for further inventories. The catalog is provided with a preface and article "On the use of manuscripts, that is, handwritten books, to the reader." The Latin text was reprinted by the University of Leipzig professor Kapp ( German: Johann Erhard Kapp ) under the title: “ Arcana Bibliothecae synodalis et typographicae Moscvensis sacra ” (1724) and then Scherer in Nordische Nebenstunden [1] , and the Russian text in “ Domestic Notes ” [2 ] .

List of Slavic manuscripts in Moscow

Schiade was commissioned by the Synod to also describe the Slavic manuscripts of the same libraries. The work was completed in January 1725, but was not printed, probably because Schiada did not manage to process it, having been removed from the post of professor of the Greek school.

Retirement

On January 16, 1725, an order was received to transfer the school to the building of the Slavic-Latin Academy , which heralded the loss of independence of the Printing School. Schiada protested and refused to obey the rector, " because through this his honor is belittled without guilt ." In response, in March 1725, the protector ordered that Schiada be removed from school, while emphasizing the absence of claims to activity. He was replaced by Alexei Barsov , bringing the school in line with academic rules. A complete resignation ensued on October 15, and the Skibad issued an “abshite” mentioned immaculate life, teachings and catalogs.

On November 10, 1725, he was appointed professor for 3 years at the Alexander Nevsky Slavic-Greek-Latin seminary (at the monastery ) for teaching Greek and Latin to young people, whose teaching had just been introduced, with a salary of 400 rubles, 10 fenders of wood and one “boil” beer. He held this position from January 20, 1726 to January 1729. In addition to training, Skiade was instructed to put in order, describe and replenish the monastery library. There are no traces of the library description, but from his books he lost to the school about 60 copies for 60 rubles.

At the end of his service at the seminary, he went to Greece (about 1729-1730).

Proceedings

  • “Two catalogs of handwritten Greek books in the Synodal Library in Moscow are acquired, which in the summer of 1722 were reviewed and disassembled by Athanasius Schiada” (Moscow, 1723; reprinted in the XVI volume of the “ Patriotic Notes ” of 1841);
