Lyceum History
Kiev-Pechersk Lyceum No. 171 “Leader” was founded in 1961 by Vasily Eliseevich Boldyrev as the first school in Kiev exclusively for high school students. V. Boldyrev became its first director. The first two years the school functioned in the building at ul. Ivana Kudri, 22A, and from September 1, 1963, the school is located in the building on the street. Leipzig, 11A.
Since 1966, the school became comprehensive, junior and middle classes, senior classes with in-depth study of mathematics and physics appeared. For the first time in Ukraine, V. Boldyrev introduced in the 171st school the rates of the head teacher for educational work, the head teacher for parallels, an office system.
The director who created the school was retired in 1974 , after Mark Isaakovich Raigorodetsky, a teacher of Russian language and literature at school No. 171, was detained in the apartment of writer and human rights activist Viktor Nekrasov with a book by Yevgeny Zamyatin and sentenced to two years in prison. [1] Boldyrev refused to give a bad characterization to his employee at the request of the authorities and was forced to retire [2] . The new director of the school was Nina Fedorovna Grigorenko. In 1980, at the school, the CHPP-5 chiefs made an extension to the school, which housed a library, a museum of military glory, a large gym, and in 1986, an informatics office was equipped.
In 1987, the school was headed by Dmitry Grigoryevich Kravchenko. The management and training system underwent restructuring. In 1990, the school was renamed the budget-departmental secondary school No. 171, the historical name “Kiev-Pecherskaya” was revived, which accompanied a number of educational institutions in Kiev since the Middle Ages. On April 18, 1991, the school received the official status of a lyceum and the name "Leader". Since 1991, the lyceum has been conducting research work on a system for supporting gifted children [3] .
In June 2017, a large-scale reconstruction of the lyceum building was launched, providing for the dismantling of the old, in disrepair, building. The project assumes that the new building will consist of 5 buildings (administrative, laboratory, creative, educational, and sports) of various storeys (3-4 + basement) and will include modern equipped training laboratories, an assembly hall, a swimming pool, a rhythm room and choreography, observatory, greenhouse, tennis court, etc. The highlight of the new building should be the atrium .
Lyceum today
Lyceum "Leader" is a multidisciplinary educational institution. So, pre-profile and profile training of students in natural, social, humanitarian, artistic, economic disciplines is carried out, foreign languages, computer science, and mathematics are studied in depth.
After the fourth grade, an in-depth study of subjects begins. Some schoolchildren begin to study English profoundly, and some start math.
After the seventh grade there is a distribution by specialties: biology, geography, chemistry, design, foreign linguistics, information technology, history, mathematics, physics, philology.
Lyceum was the first in Ukraine to introduce a learning system using multimedia lessons.
Students in grades 8-11 have additional lessons - a technology school, with subsequent delivery of projects at the end of the year. The specialty of the technical school depends on the profile of the student and class. In the 2007-08 school year, special courses were introduced - on Saturdays after the fourth lesson, each student in grades 8-11 goes to a certain elective, which he chooses for himself (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science or biology). Often, electives are conducted by graduates of the lyceum.
Mathematics is unusually strong at the Lyceum, thanks in large part to Rashman Joseph Matveevich , and subsequently to Honored Teachers of Ukraine Yakir Mikhail Semenovich and Polonsky Vitaliy Borisovich.
Starting from the mid-90s, at least one student of the “Leader” (out of 6 people) gets to the International Mathematics Olympiad every year, and in 2000, −04, −07, three people each. Also, the lyceum at one time studied one winner of the International Olympiads in physics and biology, and three - in computer science. The winners of the All-Ukrainian Olympiads in the "Leader" in mathematics alone, according to estimates, are about 300. All of them are students of mathematical classes.
In 2010, according to the results of national testing, the lyceum was among Ukrainian schools, whose students received the highest number of highest scores (200) in individual subjects. There were 13 such assessments at the Lyceum - the second place after the Ukrainian Humanitarian Lyceum of Kiev National University [4] .
Successes of Lyceum Students at International Olympiads
From the 1992/93 to the 2018/19 academic year, 42 students of the Lyceum won 56 medals (13 gold, 22 silver, 21 bronze) at international student olympiads in eight subjects (astronomy and astrophysics - 1, biology - 2, geography - 1, computer science - 6, linguistics - 5, mathematics - 36, physics - 4, chemistry - 1).

Domestic Holidays
The main domestic holiday is Lyceum Day (starting from the 2007-08 school year - the school fair). Each year a new holiday script is compiled. Teachers, students, and parents take part in the celebration.
The school year always begins with a tourist rally of the entire Turiada school.
Also, thematic weeks can be called internal holidays (that is, a week of physics, a week of computer science, etc.). Such weeks end with olympiads or games, the theme of which corresponds to the theme of the week.
The school holds KVN (for senior classes) and the festival "Zoryane Syayvo" (for elementary school). Although in the 2006-2007 academic year, instead of KVN, a Comedy Club was held.
Also in May, the Lyceum holds annually the Kiev International Mathematics Festival .
Each year, the Lyceum hosts the UN Meeting, it includes UN Junior for grades 5–7 and UN for grades 7–11. Each class selects its own country and represents its country at committee meetings. The opening ceremony is attended by consuls from different countries, including the United States. After it, the participants disperse on several committees and offer different ways to solve the problem. You can choose one committee from the list - the Counter-Terrorism Committee, the Financial Committee problems "," Committee on nuclear waste management "and" Humanitarian Aid Committee "(one or two committees may change each year). The entire UN meeting is held in English.
Symbols of the Lyceum
In 1995, the symbolism of the Lyceum was introduced: a flag, coat of arms, emblem and anthem, which contribute to the national education of lyceum students, the revival of centuries-old traditions of the Ukrainian people. The main object in the emblem is the letter M:
- The letter symbolizes the mathematical bias of the institution
- Symbol formed by two letters L - Lyceum Leader
A school uniform has been introduced at the lyceum.
