Published June 20, 1916, with color and black and white illustrations by artist John R. Neal . The book was dedicated to the author’s newborn grandson, Robert Alison Baum, the first child of the author’s second son, Robert Stanton Baum.

Most of the action of the book takes place on three islands - Pingareya, Regos and Koregos - and in the caves of the king of the gnomes . After the Dwarf King Roquette Red, who later changed his name to , was overthrown (described in Baum’s 1914 Tick-Tok from Oz ), Baum had to rewrite the history of the Dwarf kingdom to explain his tenure Ruggedo's successor is Calico . None of the inhabitants of Oz — the heroes of the previous books in the series — participate in the adventures of the heroes until the culmination of the book. This is due to the fact that Baum wrote the original version of the book back in 1905 as an independent work, not related to the cycle about the country of Oz.
Rinkitink in the Country of Oz was one of six books in the series on the country of Oz, published by Rand McNally in 1939 in a form adapted specifically for young readers to popularize the film The Wizard of Oz .
