He received a bachelor of arts and a master of business administration from Marshall University. As the only billionaire in West Virginia, Justice earned particular public sympathy for his role in saving the local resort, in which he invested $ 250 million.

In 2009, Justice, as part of a stock exchange transaction, sold the family-owned coal mining company Bluestone Resources Inc. in exchange for several mines and other enterprises of the Russian company Mechel in the south of West Virginia (the total transaction value was about $ 568 million). A deal was closed on February 12, 2015, as a result of which Justis bought his former mines for $ 5 million (less than 1% of the price at which he sold), and also committed to pay Mechel royalties in the amount of $ 3 for each ton of coal mined and sold. On May 11, 2015, he announced his intention to join the struggle for the governor’s chair as a candidate from the Democratic Party (at the end of February 2015, he changed his party affiliation, leaving the Republicans ) [2] .

On November 8, 2016, Jim Justice, who by then owned 83 companies in different states and had a capital of $ 1.6 billion, won Republican in the West Virginia governor’s election, although state voters were on the same day in the presidential election supported by Donald trump [3] .
