Academic gymnasiums ( latin gymnasium academicum ), also noble gymnasiums ( latin gymnasium illustre ), are educational institutions during the reformation era in the Republic of the United Provinces (Netherlands), Austria and Germany.
The university in the era of the reformation becomes a public institution. The professor is made a government official; the student is considered as the future servant of the sovereign, as an official or pastor . Under such conditions, even petty rulers established a university in their land; if there were no funds for a full university, then they were temporarily content with the so-called "academic" and "noble" gymnasiums ( gymnasium academicum or illustre ), so that under favorable conditions they could be turned into a university (for example, in Strasbourg , Giessen , etc.).
