Division preparedness and hostilities
In March 1945, the division was not yet ready for combat operations. However, the Luttsov combat group, formed from veterans of combat-ready divisions of the division, was sent to the 6th SS Panzer Army . The detachment under the command of SS Obersturmbannführer Karl-Heinz Keitel (son of Field Chief Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, son of the OKW chief of staff) arrived on April 4 .
The fate of the connection
Subordinate to the 1st SS Panzer Corps Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler , Keitel’s battle group, retreating through Hungary to Austria , participated in fierce battles with the advancing units of the Red Army . In May 1945, some units were captured by Soviet soldiers, while others retreated to the West to surrender to the advancing Americans.
Some soldiers from the division took part in a mass escape from the prisoner of war camp in Altheim (date of escape - May 13, 1945); the escape was undertaken after regular units of the Wehrmacht were freed from the camp, while the SS men remained in custody.
