Karl Koldewey ( German: Carl Koldewey ; October 26, 1837 , Bucken - May 17, 1908 , Hamburg ) is a German traveler.

He graduated at the Hanover Polytechnic and at the University of Gottingen ( 1867 ). In 1868, on behalf of Peterman, he led the first German expedition to the North Pole , which he described in Die erste deutsche Nordpolar-Expedion (in Mittielungen of Peterman, 1871 ). In 1869 he made a second trip to the North Pole. Appointed in 1871 as an assistant at the Hamburg Marine Observatory, under the direction of Dove, he processed the meteorological and hydrographic results of this trip at Die zwete deutsche Nordpolarfahrt ( 1873 - 1879 ). When organizing the imperial maritime observatory in Germany, Koldewey was appointed head of the second department. His works were published in the Annalen der Hydrographie und maritimen Meteorologie and in the publications of the imperial observatory.
