Biography
He was a monk in Constance , fled from there and was engaged in teaching for several years; then he returned to his homeland and was sent to repentance in Rome . In Florence, he thoroughly studied Italian literature. Upon his return to Germany, he was for some time the director of the Catholic gymnasium in Erfurt , and since 1775, the librarian of the Duchess Anna Amalie in Weimar . Here he left monasticism, converted to Protestantism and got married. In his Geschichte der freien Künste und Wissenschaften in Italien (Leipzig, 1777-1781; revision of Tiraboski 's Storia della litteratura italiana ) he introduced the Germans to Italian literature. For the same purpose, he published Magazin der ital. Litteratur und Künste ”(Weimar and Halle, 1780 - 1785 ). He also owns the translation of Dante's “ Hell ” into German . [one]
