The work is based on stories from the life of the poet, singer-songwriter of the 19th century Birzhan-sal and the poetess Sarah Tastanbekkyzy (see the aitys of Birzhan and Sarah ). In the opera, lyrical (love of Birzhan and Sarah) and social (relationship between Birzhan and volost Zhanbota) plots are closely intertwined. The image of the poet is revealed in his songs (“Aitbay”, “Zhanbota”, “Birzhan sal”, “Adasқaқ” and others). Widely used national musical forms (including kyu “Soқyr Yeszhan” by the composer of the same name ), ritual folklore: “ Heat-heat ”, lamentation of the bride’s cry, farewell song and aitys [1] .
In 1958, the opera was shown during the Decade of Art and Literature of Kazakhstan in Moscow. The famous musicologist V. Vinogradov noted the romanticism of the work, which is close in spirit to the Kazakh folk epos. In 1949, the authors and performers of the opera were awarded the Stalin Prize [1] .
The libretto was adapted into Turkish, and the opera was shown in Samsun in 2013 [2] , as well as in Istanbul , Bursa , Eskisehir and Ankara in 2014 [3] .
