Future Development
The administration of the national economy and development approved the expansion of the airport, which will be carried out by a private company called "Caticlan International Airport and the Development of the Corporation" [2] . The expansion of the airport worth 2.5 billion pesos is foreseen in two stages: at the first stage, the construction of a new passenger terminal worth about 2.1 billion pesos and the expansion of the existing runway of 2100 meters, as well as updating the equipment of the airport and the existing apron, costing 360 million pesos [2]
It is in demand as construction-operation-transfer of the project and financing from a 70-30 mixture of bank credit and the private capital sector, [2] about 25 percent of the allocated funds will be used to clean the mountains near the airport proximity, and another 18 percent will be allocated for restoration land to accommodate the extended runway [3]
The airport terminal was renovated in 2011 and was opened on July 25, 2011 by President Benigno Aquino III, the lead of the inauguration. [four]
Updating the work will allow the airport not only to service jet aircraft, but also to serve international destinations. Despite earlier assessments, this work was completed in 2011 [3] and later, between 2012 and 2014, [2] the lack of visible progress as of February 2013.
On January 1, 2014, it was reported that the San Miguel Corporation announced it would complete the expansion of the runway at Boracay Airport by the end of the year. The runway will be increased from 950 meters to 2100 meters. [5]
