History
The band was created in 1971 by keyboardist Várkonyi Mátyás, a former member of the Zé-Gé (short for Zenei Gimnázium - School of Music), and bass player Gabor Novai (Nová Gábor), who left Corvina . They were joined by two Ferm guitarists - шkos István Gábor and ákos István Gábor and Karácsony János, as well as drummer Reck Lajos and vocalist Révész Sándor. Almost immediately, they collaborated with the female vocal trio “Mikrolied”, which included Eva Varzegi (Várszegi Éva), Hedi Sheleni (Selényi Hédi) and Anna María Herzku (Herczku Annamária). In 1972, Generál & Mikrolied took part in the national talent contest Ki mit tud? ”(“ Who knows what? ”) With the song“ Mit tehet az ember ”(“ What can a person do ”) and shared 3rd place with the group“ Zephyr ”, bypassing the similar alliance“ Kócbabák & Stereo ”. In the same year, Generál & Mikrolied received the Audience Award for the same song at Táncdalfesztivál . After all these successes, musicians and vocalists toured Italy.
In 1973, “Generál & Mikrolied” recorded a very strong debut album, “Staféta”, which was No. 2 on the Slágerlistá'73 annual national charts, losing the first line only to the next album of the band “ Omega ”. Their composition “Kövér a Nap” was No. 6, “Fűrész” was No. 11, “Kérdés” was No. 17 and “Felelet” was No. 20 in the national annual Slágerlistá TOP 20. After that, the guitarist Istvan Gabor Akosh was called up for military service, and Matthias Varkony was forced to take the guitar into his hands. The following year, “Generál & Mikrolied” took part in the radio contest “ Made in Hungary ” and took first place there with the song “Csöngess be jó barát”, which was No. 4 in the annual hit parade for 1974. After this success, the group made a concert tour of the Scandinavian countries.
After the foreign tour, the group experienced the first crisis: guitarist Janos Karachon left for the Locomotiv GT supergroup, and vocalist Sandor Revez went to Piramis. The drummer Lajos Rekk also left, who was briefly replaced by András Póta from the band “ P. Mobil ”, and the new guitarist also became Pazari Károly for a short while. In the new line-up, the group recorded the English-language album "Rockin '& Rollin'", which was published in Poland, and some of the songs from the album were even released as singles in West Germany and the Netherlands. Also in Hungary, their album “Generál II” was released, which was weaker than the first and took 6th place in the annual Slágerlistá'75. Almost immediately after that, they broke up with the girls from Mikrolied.
On February 1, 1976, the composition of the group changed again: vocalist Karv Horvá (Horváth Károly) nicknamed Charlie and very talented guitarist Tátrai Tibor moved from the Olympia team to Generál, and the drummer was Solti János, previously played in Non-Stop. The group began to prepare material for the new album and actively collaborate with other artists, in particular, Gabor Novai wrote the composition “Pinokkió” for the popular Hungarian singer Juži Cherhati . In 1977, the group released the album "Zenegép", but it turned out even less successful than the previous one, and was only No. 8 in the annual national Slágerlistá'77. After that, Janos ольolti joined the Locomotiv GT team. "Generál" took part in the radio contest " A Tessék választani! ”With the song“ Gyerünk, rock and roll ”, and at the end of the year - at the television festival“ Metronóm ”with the song“ Különös szilveszter ”, thanks to which they made their way to the final part of the tournament and received a special Hungarian Television Award.
In 1978, the members of the group continued to collaborate with the singer Zhuzha Cherhati, in particular, the female vocals on their albums “Heart of Rock” (1978) and “Piros bicikli” (1979) belong to her. The album "Heart of Rock" in English was again released in Poland. Also in 1979, Zhuzha Cherhati performed the song “Különös szilveszter” in disco processing at the international music festival “ Intervision ” in Sopot and took 3rd place. However, the last album of the band “Piros bicikli” turned out to be so unfortunate that it did not even enter the national TOP 10, and the group was forced to announce its breakup. After that, Gabor Novai joined the Hungária team, Tibor Tatrai joined the Skorpió rock group, Charlie returned to his native Olympia, and Matthias Varkonyi became the director of the rock theater he created.
