Life
Philibert was the son of Margrave Bernhard III and his wife Francis of Luxembourg. Due to his infancy in the year of the death of his father (1536), the current management in Baden-Baden was transferred to the hands of Heinrich von Fleckenstein, and Philibert himself was given to the joint custody of Johann II von Palatinate-Zimmernsky, Wilhelm IV von Eberstein and Wilhelm IV of Bavaria ; and at the court of the latter he was brought up. Despite the fact that the Bavarian Duke was known for his commitment to Catholic doctrine , Philibert was able to remain faithful to Protestantism , and later declared religious freedom for his subjects.
In 1555, Philibert took part in the conclusion of a religious peace in Augsburg .
In 1565, at the height of the interfaith war in France, he planned military support for the Huguenots , but under pressure from Emperor Maximilian II he was forced to abandon his intention, and the next year he fought in Hungary against Suleiman the Magnificent . Philibert's adherence to the emperor was especially pronounced three years later, in 1569, when Philibert sided with the French king Charles IX , son-in-law of Maximilian II, against the Huguenots. On October 3, 1569, he fell in the victorious battle for the king at Moncturus . According to the testimony of his friend Heinrich von Stein, Philibert died later, captured by the Huguenots near the Spanish border.
Philibert of Baden was buried in the family tomb in the collegiate church of Baden .
