The station is located on the banks of the Mississippi River in the parish of St. Charles , Louisiana .
The construction of the Waterford NPP began in 1974, and was completed in 1985, when the first and only power unit of the station was launched. The reason for the long construction of the plant is compliance with new safety requirements after the accident at Three Mile Island in the USA. The Waterford reactor is a type of pressurized water reactor designed by Combustion Engineering [1] . Its capacity is 1218 MW.
The station also has two CHP plants. They are considered Waterford-1 and Waterford-2. Waterford NPP, in turn, comes under the third number and often appears in the names as Waterford-3.
Incidents
On August 28, 2005, Waterford NPP was shut down due to Hurricane Katrina approaching the station. On August 29, power lines going to the nuclear power plant were damaged and the station was left without an external power source. Until September 2, Waterford nuclear power plants were supported by diesel generators. On September 13, the reactor was restarted.
In February 2011, it became clear that the planned replacement of the steam generators, for which half a billion dollars had already been spent, could not be completed in due time due to a marriage in the work of the Spanish manufacturer.
Waterford was shut down on October 17, 2012 due to a problem with the generator. Again, the reactor of the station was launched only a few months later in January 2013 [2] .
