Asian Youth Football Championship 2016

The Asian Youth Football Championship 2016 ( Eng. AFC U23 Championship 2016 ) is the second ever Asian Youth Championship held by the Asian Football Confederation . The tournament, held in Qatar from January 12 to 30, 2016 , was attended by 16 teams composed of players no older than 23 years old.

For the first time, the Asian Youth Championship was also selected for the Olympic football tournament . Three championship winners received permits for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro [1] .

In the finals of the championship, the youth team of Japan with a score of 3: 2 defeated their peers from Korea . Both finalists, as well as Iraq , which took 3rd place, received the right to play at the Olympics [2] .

Tournament Host Choice

On November 28, 2014, it was decided to hold the final tournament in Qatar . Applications for the championship were also filed by Uzbekistan , Saudi Arabia and Iran [3] .

Qualifying Tournament

The draw for the group stage of the qualifying tournament was held on December 4, 2014 [4] . 43 youth teams took part in the qualifying tournament. At the group stage of the qualifying tournament, they were divided into ten groups. Matches were held from March 23 to March 31, 2015. In the final tournament, along with the host country, the winners of all ten qualifying groups, as well as the 5 best teams who took second places, qualified [5] .

Draw

The draw for the final tournament was held on September 12, 2015 in Doha . 16 teams were seeded in 4 baskets in accordance with the results of their performance at the previous youth championship [6] [7] .

As a result of the draw, the participants in the final stage were divided into four quartets (from A to D), from where two teams took the playoffs, taking 1st and 2nd place in their groups.

Compositions

The tournament hosted teams made up of players born no later than January 1, 1993. Each team was to include 23 players in the application for the tournament, including three goalkeepers [8] .

Group Stage

Rules

The winners of each of the eight groups, as well as the teams that took second places, reach the quarter finals of the tournament. The position of teams in the standings is determined by the following indicators:

  1. The number of points scored in all matches of the group stage;
  2. The difference of goals scored and conceded in all matches of the group stage;
  3. The number of goals scored in all matches of the group stage.

If the three main indicators are equal for two or more teams, the position in the table is determined by the following indicators:

  1. The number of points scored by the teams in group stage matches among themselves;
  2. The difference between the goals scored and conceded by the teams in question in the group stage matches among themselves;
  3. The number of goals scored by the teams in the group stage matches among themselves;
  4. Lot.
