Scientist

He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tirana in the course of civil engineering. From 1960 to 1962 he worked as a civil engineer. Then he changed his profession, began restoration of historical architectural monuments. Published several works on the history of medieval Albanian architecture.

In 1980 - 1990, Alexander Mexi headed the Albanian Center for Archaeological Research. In 1988 received a doctorate degree. Since 1995 - professor of history.

In 1965, he trained at the University of Rome (despite the fact that during the reign of Enver Hoxha, traveling abroad was extremely limited for Albanians). In 1989 - 1990, he taught by invitation at the University of Marburg, Germany [1] .

During the communist regime, Alexander Mexi was not involved in politics.

Prime Minister

In 1990, mass protests against the one-party rule of the communist APT began in Albania. On December 12, 1990, in the wake of protests, the Democratic Party of Albania (DPA) was established. The new party quickly gained widespread popularity with a democratization program and sharp anti-communist slogans (although its leaders, primarily Sali Berisha , were closely connected with the elite of the communist regime). One of its founders was Alexander Mexi.

We do not want to kill the supporters of socialism. But we are opposed to further building socialism. 46 years in Albania and 70 years in the Soviet Union is enough to give an assessment of this idea.
Alexander Mexi [2]

In the first multi-party elections on March 31, 1991, Alexander Mexi was elected as a deputy of the Popular Assembly from the DPA. He served as deputy chairman of parliament. He was re-elected in the elections on March 22, 1992 , when the DPA won. On April 13, 1992, President of Albania Sali Berisha appointed Alexander Mexi as Prime Minister in the first post-communist government of Albania [3]

The period of Mexico’s premiership has undergone dramatic economic reforms with painful social consequences. Despite this, Mexi remained at the head of the government for five years. In 1995, he visited Russia and signed five intergovernmental agreements with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin [4] .

Alexander Mexi was forced to resign during the 1997 massive armed riots caused by the financial crisis. [5]

Politician

Alexander Mexi until 2001 remained a member of parliament from the DPA. Then he returned to scientific research on the history of architecture. He also acted as a political publicist.

In 2009, Alexander Mexi led the conservative Pole of Freedom bloc. He stands for "the revival of the ideals of December 1990", the European development of Albania, against nepotism and corruption [6] . However, despite Mexi’s personal authority, the coalition did not succeed in the election.

Alexander Mexi is married and has two children. He speaks English , French , Italian and Russian .
