Biography
Pupil of the famous surgeon Luigi Port. From 1857 to 1859 he was the chief surgeon in Mantua .
Later he took up teaching activities in the field of surgical clinic. Since 1861, he lectured on sexually transmitted infectious diseases , in particular, syphilology.
Until his death in 1904, he was head of the Department of Surgery at Pavia University .
A. Scarenzio’s wide popularity is associated, first of all, with his discovery in 1864 of treatment of syphilis with the subcutaneous method using calomel , a method that he developed due to the concept of providing the body with one or very few uses of the drug to cure the disease. Calomel injections have been considered the most effective treatment for syphilis for decades before the discovery of Paul Ehrlich chemotherapy drug Salvarsan .
A. Scarenzio, as an experienced surgeon, was also interested in cosmetic surgery ( rhinoplasty ).
The author of the work “Treatment of syphilis according to the improved method of Angelo Scarenzio, professor at Pavian University” (St. Petersburg: the journal Practical Medicine, 1893).
