UMLS ( English Unified Medical Language System - a unified language of medical systems) - a tool for the development of computer systems "understand" biomedical information and information in the field of healthcare . Development began in 1986 at the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
UMLS has three knowledge sources: the Metathesaurus, the Semantic Network, the SPECIALIST vocabulary.
UMLS goals:
- creation of comprehensive intellectual components of medical information systems;
- providing free of charge intelligent components to system developers to interpret and clarify customer requirements, display customer terms in appropriate controlled dictionaries and classification schemes, interpret natural language, create data structures. These tools are also useful as reference material for database creators, librarians, etc.
- knowledge base for unification of the language environment.

UMLS and VistA
It should be noted the implementation in practice of the completeness of the medical universe (standards + management) in the VistA system. The execution of control functions extends the essentially syntactic nature of UMLS to the operational semantics of the lambda calculus of the MUMPS language .
Of great importance for semantics are also large / comprehensive ER schemes that matured during the thirty-year development of VistA.
OASIS
Another system of comprehensive description of the ontological structures of medicine is the OASIS meta-project for standardization: XML in Clinical Research and Healthcare Industries [1] . The software implementation of the OASIS concept is the ebXML system.
