Biography

Born March 22 ( April 3 ), 1859 in St. Petersburg. He graduated from Kholm High School in 1880 and the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University in 1884. He was left at the university to prepare for a professorship. In 1888 he passed the master's exam and the following year was sent to listen to lectures at Vienna and Berlin universities. Studying Slavic manuscripts in many European cities, in 1890 he discovered in the Vienna Court Library a Serbian list of the 14th Century Teaching Gospel .

Returning to Russia in 1892, he was sent by the Ministry of Education to study the ancient storages of Moscow, St. Petersburg and some provincial cities with the aim of studying biblical manuscripts. In 1895, he was identified as a lecturer of the Russian language at the University of Warsaw .

In 1904 he defended his master's thesis "On the Literary Heritage of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Croatian Verbal Missal and Breviary ", and in 1913 - a doctoral dissertation on the topic "Experience in studying the Book of Genesis . Paremy edition ”; in 1915 he was awarded the Lomonosov Prize by the Academy of Sciences. Since 1905 - an extraordinary , and since 1913 - an ordinary professor . In 1914 he was dismissed from the university by petition and since 1915 he began to teach at Moscow University .

He was a member of the Commission for the compilation of a dialectological map of the Russian language . He headed the department of the Russian language and Russian literature of the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University from 1919 to 1922. He also taught at the Kostroma Pedagogical Institute (1920-1923) and the Faculty of Education of Smolensk University (1923-1924).

Since 1908, he was a member of the commission for the publication of monuments of Old Russian writing; since 1914 - a member of the Moscow Archaeological Society . He was also a member of the Dialectological Commission, the Dictionary Commission and the Bible Commission. For the Bible Commission, he, as the initiator of the scientific publication of the Slavic Bible (as far back as 1903), prepared the rules for the publication of Old Slavonic texts during 1915-1922.

He died on August 10, 1927 in Moscow.
