History of Post and Stamps Sao Tome and Principe

The history of the postal and postage stamps of Sao Tome and Principe , a small state on the islands of the same name in the Gulf of Guinea off the west coast of Africa with the capital in Sao Tome , can be divided into two stages: the period of the Portuguese colony [1] [2] (until 1975 ) and the period of the independent Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (since July 12, 1975) [2] . Sao Tome and Principe is a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU; since 1977 ). The modern postal operator of the country is the port company . Correios de São Tomé e Príncipe (" Post of Sao Tome and Principe") [3] , founded on January 1, 1982 [4] .

Colony of Portugal

First Marks

The first postage stamps of Sao Tome and Principe appeared in 1869 [1] [2] . These were colonial type stamps , which were then issued by Portugal for its colonies [2] as part of the (or the Portuguese Crown ). According to the Scott catalog , the series had nine denominations and the stamps appeared in varieties during the years 1869-1875 [5] .

Subsequent Issues

The second issue included stamps of the same colonial type, with the image of the crown , and five denominations that appeared in 1881-1885 [5] .

In 1887, a new series of colonial type was issued - with an embossed profile picture of King Louis I. It was printed in a printing way and consisted of nine denominations [5] . Subsequently, a number of other issues of the colonial type came out, including the well-known series “ Reaper ”.

The original stamps published by the colonial postal administration have the following inscriptions: “S. Thomé e Principe ” (Sao Tome and Principe); Correio (Mail) "Correio. Portugal S. Thomé e Principe " (" Mail. Portugal. Sao Tome and Principe "); "Imperio colonial portugues. S. Tomé e Principe ” (“ Portuguese Colonial Empire . Sao Tome and Principe ”) [1] .

After the overthrow of the monarchy in the metropolis in 1910, an overprint was made on the stamps of Sao Tome and Principe: “Republica” (“ Republic ”), and subsequently original stamps with the text: “Republica Portugueza. S. Tomé e Principe ” (“ Portuguese Republic . Sao Tome and Principe ”) [1] .

The first commemorative stamps of the islands were released in 1938, and the first postal block in 1948 [2] .

According to L. L. Lepeshinsky [1] , in total for the incomplete first 100 years of colonial rule , from 1869 to 1963, 403 postage stamps and one block were issued. The Scott catalog contains 423 basic descriptive numbers for the stamps of these islands issued in 1869-1939 [5] .

Democratic Republic

In honor of the declaration of state independence , a commemorative series was published in 1975. In 1976, stamps of the colonial period were overprinted with the new name of the state in Portuguese [2] .

Theme

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1977, a series of commemorative stamps and five blocks were published in Sao Tome and Principe. The country's post also issued commemorative series and blocks dedicated to the Olympic Games in Moscow [2] .

Newspaper

For Sao Tome and Principe, they issued newspaper stamps , which appeared in 1892 [2] .

Airmail

The first airmail stamps came into circulation in 1938 [2] .

Paid

Paid stamps have been issued on the islands since 1904 [2] . On these stamps there is the text “Porteado a receber” (“Surcharge. Pay”), and in total for the period 1869-1963 60 surcharge stamps were issued [1] .

Famous postal and tax stamps of Sao Tome and Principe, which first came into circulation in 1925 [2] .

Postal Charities

Colonial Post Office also distributed postage-charitable stamps ; for the period 1869-1963 there are eight such brands. The text was indicated on them: “Assistencia” (“Help”) [1] .
