Club career
While studying at school, Zizzo began to engage in football and baseball . After entering the University of California at Los Angeles, he began to play for the football team of the school [2] . In 2006, Sal also played for the Orange County Blue Star team from the USL PDL.
In 2007, after the World Youth Championship, Zizzo signed a contract with the German club Hannover 96 [3] . On May 10, 2008, in his match against Werder Bremen , he made his debut in the Bundesliga [4] . Due to the high competition, Sal played mainly for the backup team. In the summer of 2009, he went on loan to the Dusseldorf Fortuna [5] , but due to a break in his ligaments he could not make his debut for the club [6] .
In the summer of 2010, Zizzo returned to his homeland and joined the Chivas USA [7] . On August 22, in his match against Dallas , he made his MLS debut [8] .
In early 2011, Sal was traded to the Portland Timbers . [9] On March 26, in a match against the Canadian Toronto , he made his debut for a new club [10] . On August 15, 2012, in a duel against Toronto, Zizzo scored his first goal in the MLS [11] .
At the end of 2013, he moved to Sporting Kansas City [12] [13] . On March 8, Sal made his debut for the new team in a match against the Seattle Sounders . [14] On September 23, in the 2014/15 CONCACAF Champions League match against Nicaraguan Real Esteli , Zizzo scored his first goal for Sporting Kansas City [15] .
On December 10, 2014, at the MLS Expansion Draft, Sel was selected by the New York City Club [16] [17] , but the next day he was exchanged at the New York Red Bulls for the annual rent of goalkeeper Ryan Mira [18] . On March 9, in his match against his former Sporting Kansas City club, he made his debut for a new team [19] . In his debut season, Zizzo helped the club win the Supporters' Shield [20] . At the end of the 2017 season , the New York Red Bulls announced no extension of the contract with Zizzo [21] .
On January 30, 2018, Zizzo, as a free agent, signed a contract with Atlanta United Club [22] [23] . His debut for Atlanta United took place on March 31 in a match against Minnesota United , where he replaced Hector Villalba in the second half. In early August, during a training session, Zizzo suffered an injury to his right knee, which is why he missed the rest of the 2018 season [24] . After the end of the 2018 season, Atlanta United, which won the MLS Cup , did not renew the contract with Zizzo [25] .
On May 21, 2019, Sal Zizzo officially announced the end of his football career. [26]
International Career
In 2007, Zizzo as part of the U.S. youth team reached the quarterfinals of the World Youth Championships in Canada . On August 22 of the same year, in a friendly match against Sweden, Sal made his debut for the US team , replacing Damascus Beasley in the second half [27] . He also played for the Olympic team , but did not go to Beijing for the Olympics .

Personal life
Sal has Italian roots, since his parents are from Palermo [28] , this circumstance helped him in negotiating the transition to the German " Hannover 96 " [29] . In November 2013, he married American actress Destiny Monitz, and soon their daughter Capri was born.
