Biography

Born in the business part of London , in the family of the jeweler Nicholas Gerrick, who committed suicide when Robert, his fourth son, was about a year old. He studied with his uncle, the royal jeweler, William Gerrick. When he reached the age of majority and received an inheritance of 400 pounds, Gerrick went to study in Cambridge . In 1617 he received a bachelor's degree, and in 1620 a master's degree.

After graduation, Gerrick lived in London, leading an idle life and enjoying the fame of anacreontic lyricist and master of epigrams. He had high patrons: Endymion Porter, Ambassador and Court of Charles I, Mildmey Fein, Earl of Westmoreland and Earl of Philip Pembroke. In 1623, Gerrick took the priesthood. In 1627, as a priest, he participated in the unsuccessful expedition of the Duke of Buckingham to the Isle of Re in France, and in 1629 received from the king a small parish of Dean Pryor , church of st. George the Great Martyr, at Buckfastleigh, in Dartmoor, Devonshire , where he served as vicar from 1629 to 1674. During the Civil War, Gerrick glorified Charles I and his victory, so that after the defeat and capture of the king in 1647 (the so-called “ Cromwell Period”), he, as a royalist, was temporarily expelled from his parish and returned to London .

Most of Herrick's poems were published in 1648 in the poetry collection “Hesperides, or Compositions Secular and Spiritual” (“Hesperides”), which presents pastoral, anacreontic, religious lyrics. The world of love, recreated in Gerrick's poetry, is a happy and carefree world, not like the world of John Donne or Ben Johnson. The secular section of the book contains 1130 different poems, testifying to the extreme versatility of the author. Here you can find witchcraft spells, odes in the taste of Horace, and songs about nature, and feast songs, and elegant trinkets addressed to an imaginary lady of the heart, as well as poetic tales and epigrams.

After the release of this book, Gerrick moved away from poetry. In 1660 , after the Restoration of the royal power, Gerrick was restored in his rights and returned to his parish in Devonshire, where he lived until the end of his days.
