After the end of the Russian championship, the long-term leaders of the Russian national team, Lyubov Sokolova and Ekaterina Gamova, announced the completion of their careers and it became clear that on the eve of the Olympics, head coach Yuri Marichev cannot count on them. As part of the national team of Russia, only one volleyball player made her debut - Daria Malygina. In addition, an experienced binder Marina Babeshina was again called up to the team. In the 2016 season, the World Grand Prix was seen primarily as a dress rehearsal before the Olympic Games.

The Russian national team completed the preliminary stage of the Grand Prix in third place and reached the final stage of the draw, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand . In their group of the final stage, the Russians lost to Brazil and not without difficulty outplayed the Thai team, and in the semifinal they could not oppose the US team. In the match for β€œbronze” with the Dutch team, Russian volleyball players led 2-0 and had several match balls in the 3rd game, but could not realize them, after which the game broke and the Dutch won two more games and left the Russian team without draw medals [2] .

For various reasons, the composition of the Russian team on the eve of the Olympics has undergone significant adjustments. Compared to the Grand Prix that ended less than a month ago, Startseva, Malykh, Ilchenko, Lyubushkin and Babeshin were out of the application. Unexpectedly for many, the composition included a connecting Vera Vetrova (after a 6-year break in speaking for the national team) and forward-gamer Irina Voronkova , for whom this was her debut in the national team of the country.

After four matches, the Russian team led the standings in their group, but the defeat in the final round of the group stage from Brazil left Russian volleyball players in second place and in the quarterfinal they got the Serbian team , the fights with which in recent years have traditionally been very difficult for the Russian team. As a result, the very first playoff match for the Russians was the last in the tournament. The defeat in the first game with a score of 9:25 left an imprint on the rest of the game. The volleyball players of Russia failed to fully recover and the defeat in three sets put an end to the team’s medal hopes. Unable to overcome the quarterfinal barrier, the Russian team repeated its negative result of the last two Olympics [3] .

Summary

In total, the Russian team accounted for 24 official matches in 2016. Of these, 18 were won, lost 6. The ratio of the parties is 58:31. The rivals of the Russians in these matches were the national teams of 13 countries.
