Biography

Born in the Chernihiv province in the family of an officer. Educated at the Nezhin Gymnasium , then studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of St. Vladimir , who graduated in 1855 with a candidate’s degree. After graduation, he taught at the Nizhyn gymnasium. He defended his master's thesis "The Importance of Adam Smith in the History of Political and Economic Systems" (1859) and received the post of associate at the University of St. Vladimir at the department of political economy and statistics. At the same time he taught general history at the Kiev Institute of Noble Maidens and statistics in the cadet corps.

In 1862 he was sent abroad. Upon return, he was elected extraordinary professor. He defended his doctoral dissertation “Railways and the state. Research experience in the most important subjects of economy and railway policy ”(1869), in which he was one of the first to demand the intervention of the state in the railway sector [1] . After the defense, he was elected an ordinary professor in the department of political economy and statistics of the University of Kiev. In 1871 he was elected vice-rector of the university.

In 1872, he was again sent abroad. Upon his return in 1873, he moved to the Imperial Kharkov University as an ordinary professor in the department of political economy, where he taught until 1898. Secretary of the Law Faculty of Kharkov University (1875–1881). He was elected rector of Kharkov University (1881), but with the introduction of a new university charter he resigned from this post (1884) [2] .

Known as the author of works on the railway industry, he spoke as a supporter of the active role of the state in this area. In addition to his dissertations, he published in “Kiev University News” in 1866, “A Brief Overview of Political Economy”. G. M. Tsekhanovetsky wrote very little, but was highly respected among professors as a man of great erudition, versatile, humane, and responsive, a teacher-leader of youth in the best, highest sense of the word, who did not allow compromises [1] .

He was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV degree; St. Anne, II degree; St. Stanislav II degree [2] .

Kharkov University erected a monument on his grave (1898) [1] .
