Biography
Ari Volman was born in Haifa in 1962. He was the last child in the family of a chemistry professor who taught at the Haifa Technion and an eye doctor. He served in the Golani brigade in the officer rank, and was wounded [4] . A year after the end of active service, he spent abroad, then returning to Israel to study film business [5] . Volman and Ori Sivan's thesis, absurd comedy “Comfortably Numb” ( Hebrew שאנן שיא , English Comfortably Numb ), telling about the psychological injuries of Israelis who survived rocket attacks during the Persian Gulf war , received the prize of the Israeli Film Academy in nomination "Best documentary" [5] [6] .
After several years of working in documentary, Volman shot the feature film “St. Clara” ( Hebrew קלרה הקדושה ) based on a novel by Czech writer Pavel Kohout . The film won “Ophir” - the prize of the Israeli Academy of Cinema - in seven nominations, including for best directing [5] [6] . Volman’s second full-length feature film, Made in Israel ( Hebrew Made in Israel ), a futuristic fantasy about the persecution of the last Nazis on Earth, was released in 2001 [5] . In the early years of the 21st century, Volman worked as a screenwriter on Israeli television, writing material for popular TV shows, including Saturday and Holidays ( Hebrew שבתות וחגים ), In Treatment ( Hebrew בטיפול ) and Weekly Chapter ( Hebrew פרשת השבוע ). For work on the series “In Treatment”, Volman, along with other screenwriters (including Nir Bergman , Hagai Levy and Ori Sivan) received the prize from the Israel Television Academy in 2006 [7] ; In the future, this project would be adapted for the American television audience by HBO . In 2004, while working on the documentary series “What Love Is Made of,” Volman drew the artist Yoni Goodman to the process, who made animated scenes for each series using his own flash technique [5] [8] .
Volman's reservist service as a professional filmmaker went through filming for AOI [4] . At forty, he submitted his resignation and was referred to an army psychologist for a series of conversations. During these conversations, according to Volman, he came to the conclusion that it was necessary to analyze the military past of Israel from the point of view of the soldiers who waged these wars [9] . Together with a group of like-minded people, he began collecting stories about the first three months of the Lebanon war . Based on the material collected, a 90-minute video was shot, which was then converted into the Waltz with Bashir animated film, which describes the psychological trauma that the Lebanese war has become for many Israeli soldiers. Money for the production was personally collected by Volman, who took, when donations were not enough, a loan for a million shekels [4] . Yoni Goodman, whose flash technique was used in the animation, as well as artist David Polonsky, worked on the film with him again [8] . This picture was released in 2008, collecting numerous Israeli and international awards. Volman was awarded two Ophirs - as a screenwriter and director - and the Guild of directors and scriptwriters of the USA, Waltz received, among other awards, Cesar [7] and Golden Globes [10] and was nominated for an Oscar for the best a film in a foreign language [11] , and also awarded the prize of the Asia-Pacific Film Academy as the best animated film [7] . The Waltz with Bashir and the awards he received made Volman a target for harsh criticism from both camps of Israeli politics. Right-wing people accused him of betraying the interests of Israel, and some left-wing journalists (in particular Gideon Levy ) simultaneously accused him of cynicism and willingness to make money on the blood of Arabs [12] .
In 2013, Volman's next film, Congress, was released. This anti-utopian picture, showing the possible near future of cinema and society as a whole, was praised in IndieWIRE [13] and cooler reviews in Variety and Hollywood Reporter [14] . The tape entered the competition program of the Cannes Film Festival , won several grand prix at festivals of lower rank and was awarded the prize of the European Film Academy for the best animated film [7] . Volman’s new project - an animated film combining hand-drawn and puppet animation, the plot of which is based on Anne Frank's diary - was announced already in 2013, and in 2015 the first frames from the new picture appeared on the Internet [15] .
Volman is married to film producer Anat Asulin, the spouses have three children [4] .
