After studying at the University of Zurich and the higher schools of Paris and Florence, Jacob Yud worked since 1922 as a professor of Roman philology and Old French literature in Zurich . The main objects of his research were Italian , French and Romansh dialectology, onomasiology .
Under the influence of his teacher Heinrich Morph, he joined the direction of linguistic geography of Jules Gillieron with his ideas of “words and things” (Wörter und Sachen), therefore, in addition to purely linguistic phenomena, he studied the interaction of language and culture. This area has become the center of his research. Jude, together with Karl Jäberg, worked on the creation of an eight-volume “word-of-mouth” dictionary of Italy and Switzerland ( German: Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz , French Atlas linguistique et ethnographique de l'Italie et de la Suisse méridionale , AIS), published in 1928 —1940 Paul Scheuermeier , Gerhard Rolfs and Max Leopold Wagner also took part in this work as researchers.
Jacob Yud opposed the irredentism of the Italian fascists , who classified the Romansh language as a dialect of Italian , from a linguistic standpoint defending the independence of this reto-romance language.
Together with Arnald Steiger, he published the scientific journal Vox Romanica . Among his students, the most famous linguists are Rudolf Hotzenköherle and Fritz Guzling .
