Arnhem land

Arnhem Land on the map of Australia.

Arnhem Land [1] [2] [3] , Arnhemland [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] , Arnhemlend [3] ( eng. Arnhem Land ) - a peninsula in northern Australia , is allocated to a separate region . On the peninsula is Kakadu National Park , which is a World Heritage Site .

In different traditions there is a different understanding of the boundaries of Arnhem Land.

In the English-speaking tradition, Arnhem Land is usually understood as the northeastern part of the Northern Territory , either with the inclusion of the Kakadu National Park (then the western border runs approximately along the Mary River) or without it (then the western border runs along the eastern boundary of the park - Alligator to the meridian 133 ° and further along it to the south; shown on the map to the right . In the east, Arnhem Land in both cases reaches the Gulf of Carpentaria , and the southern border is mainly the Roper River. Administratively it is divided (in the expanded ariante) between the counties of West Arnhem and East Arnhem and the northern part of Roper . The area is about 97 thousand square kilometers , the population is 16,230 people ( 2007 ).

In the Soviet-Russian tradition, Arnhem Land is generally understood to mean almost the entire northern part of the Northern Territory , from the Daily River in the west to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the east. In this understanding, the city of Darwin - the capital of the Northern Territory - is located in the north-west of Arnhem Lend. Washed by the Timor Sea , the Arafur Sea and its Gulf of Carpentaria.
