Biography

Victor Varlamov was born on April 28, 1948 in the city of Petropavlovsk, North Kazakhstan Region, Kazakh SSR . He began to actively engage in speed skating in Ufa , was a member of the Ufa voluntary sports society Burevestnik , and was trained under the guidance of the honored Bashkir coach Vladimir Konstantinovich Kyak .

The first serious success in speed skating was achieved in the 1973 season, when he won the RSFSR championship in 10,000 meters and for the first time became a member of the Soviet national team. A year later, at the winter Spartakiad of the peoples of the USSR in Sverdlovsk he was again the best at ten thousand meters, became the champion of the country in this discipline. In 1975 he defended the title of champion of the country at a ten-kilometer distance, defeated all rivals at the European Championships in Heerenveen, visited the World Championships in Oslo , where he received bronze at ten thousand meters and took ninth place in the total all-around. At the end of the season, he was awarded the honorary title " Master of Sports of the USSR of the international class ."

In 1976, Varlamov for the third time in a row became the champion of the USSR at a distance of 10,000 meters, while in the overall standings of classical all-around he was located on the third line, losing only Vladimir Lobanov and Sergey Marchuk on points. At the world championship in Heerenveen, he again won the bronze medal in his crown discipline and took eleventh place in the total all-around. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck - he started here at distances of 5000 and 10000 meters, in both cases he showed the fourth result, not reaching the prize positions.

He remained in the USSR national team until 1978, although recently he had not won any significant victories at the all-Union level.

He has higher education, in 1976 he graduated from the Ufa Aviation Institute named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze (now the Ufa State Aviation Technical University ). In 1993 he received the title "Outstanding Athlete of the Republic of Bashkortostan."
