Biography

Born in the village of Tereblya, Tyachiv district, Transcarpathian region . After graduating from Uzhgorod University (1953) and postgraduate studies at the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine ( 1957 ), he defended his Ph.D. ( 1958 ), and in 1973, his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Alpine flora of the Ukrainian Carpathians”. He worked as a senior researcher at the Central Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , since 1969 - a senior researcher, head of the department of higher plants, deputy director for science at the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1975, part-time, and since 1978, the state has been working at the T. Shevchenko National University of Kyiv as the head of the department of higher plants, the dean of the Faculty of Biology, and the professor of the Department of Botany. Since 2004 - Head of the Department of Ecology of the Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine". Since 2007 - Head of the Department of Ecology and Plant Physiology of the Kremenets Humanitarian Pedagogical Institute. T. Shevchenko.

Scientific activity

The main scientific works are devoted to floristry, phytoecososology and phytochorology. He is a pioneer of research in the field of plant protection and phytochorology in Ukraine. He initiated and authored the first edition of the Red Book of the Ukrainian SSR ( 1980 ); co-author of the first ( 1978 ) and second (1984) editions of the Red Book of the USSR. He was a co-author of the reference book “Wild useful plants of Ukraine”. In collaboration with academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences A. L. Takhtadzhyan, he took part in the preparation of the construction of rare and endemic species of the flora of Europe in the USSR for the first (1976) and second ( 1982 ) publications in England. He founded and justified two new scientific directions in intososology: outphytososology (protection of certain plant species) and synphytososology (protection of plant cenoses), which are developed and expanded by his students and followers.

He is the author of about 200 scientific works, including 19 monographs , reference books , study guides.

He prepared 18 candidates and doctors of sciences.

During 1966-1974 he carried out scientific projects with the mapping of the Carpathian flora together with scientists from Czechoslovakia , Poland , Hungary , Romania and Bulgaria . Since 1973, participates as a co-author, and subsequently as a member of the main editorial committee, in the issue, together with scientists from 36 European countries, of the multi-volume publication Atlas Florae Europaeae. Member and executive editor of many scientific journals, thematic collections and the like.

Recognition

He was awarded the medal of the XII International Botanical Congress (1975), the sign " Excellence in Education of Ukraine " (1982). Soros professor (1997), laureate of the prize named after T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University T. Shevchenko (1999).
