freenode (from the English. free node - literally free node ) - the most popular [1] IRC network. It was formerly known as the Open Projects Network .

Has a reputation as a “home of software developers." There are channels for many projects, including channels for Wikipedia [2] [3] .

The network has more than a dozen servers around the world. When connected to chat.freenode.net, the user is redirected to a random server, which contributes to an even load distribution between the servers.

History

The history of the network began with the small GNU / Linux user support channel #linuxneo, created by Rob Levine in 1994 on the EFNet IRC network. Soon the channel changed its name to #LinPeople. In 1995 , after moving to Undernet , and then to DALnet , #LinPeople turned into a small network irc.linpeople.org. In early 1998, the network changed its name to Open Projects Net. At that time, the network had about 200 users and less than 20 channels.

In 2002, the network was renamed to freenode, and the Peer-Directed Projects Center organization was also registered [4] .
