A hardware port is a specialized connector in a computer designed to connect certain types of equipment. Typically, ports are called connectors designed for peripheral equipment that are substantially separated from computer architecture (for example, PCI / ISA / AGP / VLB / PCI-E connectors, ports for RAM and a processor are not called ports).

Some ports allow hot plugging and unplugging , others necessarily require prior disconnection of the equipment being connected from the mains.

Hardware ports include:

  • Parallel port
  • Serial port
  • USB port
  • PATA / SATA
  • IEEE 1394 connector (FireWire)
  • PS / 2 connector
  • Video Interface Connectors: VGA , DVI , HDMI , Display Port
