Ronald Runaldo Venetian ( n. Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan ; born June 18, 1936 ) is a politician of Suriname , a mathematician by education, and of African descent by origin. Served as president of Suriname in 1991-1996 , re-elected president in 2000 , re-elected in 2005 .

Biography
Born on June 18, 1936 in Paramaribo (Suriname). In 1955 he graduated from school in Paramaribo with honors, received one of 5 Dutch scholarships for gifted graduates. He then studied mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden (the Netherlands ). There he received a PhD degree in 1964. He then returned to Suriname and worked first as a teacher of mathematics, and since 1969 as a school principal.
Policy
Venetian began his political career in the 1970s, when he became an activist of the NPK party ( Nationale Partij Kombinatie ). During the big strikes against the Sedney-Lachmon government in 1973, he was the director of AMS ( Algemene Middelbare School ) and at the same time the head of the teachers' union. After the election success of the NPK party ( Nationale Partij Kombinatie ) in 1973, he became Minister of Education and People’s Development in the government of Prime Minister Henck AE Arron .
February 25, 1980 after the military coup, he passed the post of minister and became an assistant professor at the Technical Faculty of the University of Paramaribo ( Universität von Paramaribo nach Anton de Kom , ADEK).
November 25, 1987 after the restoration of democracy, Venetian again became Minister of Education.
September 7, 1991 became the 6th President of Suriname.
