In 1947 , he joined the staff of the British Atomic Energy Research Establishment , engaged in experiments on the first-generation particle accelerator.
In 1957 , he published a scientific article in which he first formulated a criterion for providing energy during thermonuclear fusion (later called the Lawson criterion ).
Later, Lawson was engaged in research on the applied problems of electromagnetism related to the operation of microwave lamps and particle accelerators, as well as radiation research.
