The Ural Asbestos Mining and Processing Plant is an enterprise in the city of Asbest, Sverdlovsk Region, 80 km north-east of the capital of the Urals, the city of Yekaterinburg.

It specializes in the extraction and enrichment of chrysotile asbestos . It produces 21% of chrysotile in the world and 41% in the Russian Federation, 80% of the produced chrysotile is exported. The plant is also one of the largest producers of non-metallic building materials in Russia, which are supplied for road and rail construction. The annual capacity is 12 million tons. The structure of Uralasbest OJSC (short name) includes 10 structural divisions and 14 subsidiaries that offer various services and additional types of products. It has international certificates ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 [1] .
History
In 1885, A.P. Ladyzhensky discovered a large deposit of chrysotile asbestos in the Urals, near the city of Yekaterinburg. Already in 1889, the development of the field began, and 30 tons of chrysotile were obtained during the year. The following year, asbestos production amounted to 300 tons. In 1901, explosive devices began to be used at the mines; in 1905, 6,000 tons were mined.
In 1913, more than 22 and a half thousand tons of asbestos were produced. The plant supplies products to different countries: Germany, Austria, England, Japan. By the end of 1917, four asbestos mining and processing enterprises were operating in the field. On April 29, 1918, according to the decree of the regional Council of Commissars, the enterprises were nationalized. In 1922, the Uralasbest Trust was created. In the same year, the first chrysotile processing factory was launched, and in 1930, the second asbestos-enrichment factory.
In 1933, the Uralasbest trust was reorganized into the Uralasbokombinat enterprise, in 1939 all enterprises were transferred to the Soyuzasbest trust. In 1935, the third factory for the production of asbestos was launched. In 1940, 118,600 tons of asbestos were produced. During the Great Patriotic War, the enterprise produced products for the front, in 1943 the plant was awarded the banner of the State Defense Committee, which was transferred to the Soyuzasbest trust for eternal storage. In 1947, output amounted to 125,600 tons, which broke the previous record in 1940. In 1950, with the assistance of an enterprise in Asbest, a laboratory for research in the field of asbestos industry was opened. 5 factory was opened in 1955, and factory 4 was commissioned the following year. In 1965, Soyuzasbest trust was renamed Uralasbest. In 1966, the plant was awarded the Order of Lenin for overfulfillment of plans for the production of asbestos and the re-equipment of the production forces of the enterprise. in 1969, asbestos production began in 6 plants, which became the largest in the world in the production of this type of product.
In 1971, the enterprise was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In 1972, the enterprise team was awarded a memorial sign in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the USSR. In 1976, the highest result was achieved in the production and enrichment of asbestos - 1,547,500 tons.
After the collapse of the USSR, the enterprise was transformed into a joint stock company. From 1996 to 2000, the enterprise mastered the production of fractional crushed stone.
In 2015, in the rating of the largest exporters of the Urals and Western Siberia “Ural Export-100” according to the magazine “ Expert ”, the Ural Asbestos Mining and Processing Plant took the 20th place [2] .
