Igor Romanovich Barilyak ( August 7, 1942 , Lviv - September 12, 2009 , Kiev ) - Soviet medical figure, doctor of medical sciences , professor , head of the department of medical genetics of the Scientific Center of Radiation Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, professor of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, scientific director of the Institute of Reproduction Genetics, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology . The son of Professor R. A. Barilyak (1914-1988).

The research direction of Igor Barilyak is ecogenetic studies, the study of mutagenic and teratogenic activity of environmental factors, the search (primarily of plant origin) for organisms with mutagenic properties.

Barilyak is the author of the concept and the introduction of the principles of medical genetic counseling and the creation of an effective medical genetic service into healthcare practice. In 1999, Barilyak created the Scientific Center for Medical Genetics.

Igor Barilyak is the author of more than 600 scientific papers, including 13 monographs on various issues of genetics . From 1992 to 1997, he headed the State scientific-technical program "Protection of the gene pool of the population of Ukraine", and from 1996 to 2007 he was co-director of the Ukrainian-American program to prevent congenital developmental defects "

Under his leadership, completed 7 doctoral and 26 master's theses.

I. R. Barilyak is a member of the editorial board of the journals Cytology and Genetics , Ecological Genetics (Russia), deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Vestnik of the Ukrainian Society of Genetics and Breeders, editor-in-chief of the collection Problems of Ecological and Medical Genetics and Clinical Immunology.

Chairman of the Medical Genetics Problem Commission of the Ministry of Health and Medical Sciences of Ukraine , President of the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects, member of the Board of the International Alliance with the same name, vice president of the Ukrainian Society of Medical Genetics, member of two specialized academic councils for the defense of doctoral and master's theses (including including the head of one council).
