Alexander Nikolayevich Popov ( July 1 ( 13 ), 1820 - November 16 ( 28 ), 1877 [2] ) - Russian historian and jurist [2] of the Slavophile trend .

Biography

Born July 1 ( 13 ), 1820 [2] in the village of Lubyanka [3] . He graduated from Ryazan Gymnasium and Imperial Moscow University (1839) [4] . In 1841 he published a master's study " Russian truth in relation to criminal law ." To obtain the Department of State Law at the University Law School, he gave a trial lecture, after which he was refused [5] .

In the early 1840s he went to Montenegro and in 1847 in St. Petersburg published a book in which he gave an outline of the history of this country and described its legal life. Since November 22, 1845 he served in the 2nd department of the imperial chancellery. Valid state adviser since May 17, 1858. In 1859-1860 - Member of the Editorial Commissions . Since December 7, 1873 - corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in the category of historical and political sciences of the historical and philological department [2] .

He died on November 16 ( 28 ), 1877 [2] [6] . According to A. A. Polovtsov , Popov was “a small, round, dark-skinned man with sharp eyes, a constant smile and extremely amiable manners, which was extremely rare in official life. He spoke a lot and well with great animation without any affectation, without false fire or pretense of indifference. He served for a long time under Count Bludov and, according to physicians, died from the effects of intense mental activities ” [7] .

Proceedings

A.N. Popov is the author of a number of works on the history of Russian foreign policy and the Patriotic War of 1812 . Of great scientific interest were the materials published by Popov for the history of Stenka Razin's indignation (1857), The Case of Novikov and His Companions under New Documents (Vestnik Evropy, 1868, April). In its historical views, it was close to a public school [6] .

In addition, Popov posted many reviews of historical works in the Izvestia of the Imperial Academy of Sciences , in the Journal of the Ministry of Public Education , and other letters to him by Stakhovich, Elagina, Koshelev, Undolsky, Belyaev and Katkov, see in the Russian Archive ( 1886, t.   4. ↑ In the Report on the Status and Actions of the Imperial Moscow University for the 1835/6 academic and 1836 civil years , eighteen-year-old Alexander Popov, from among the officer officers who graduated from Ryazan Gymnasium, is among the high school students of the law faculty of the 2nd year.
