History

The German collegium was founded on August 31, 1552 by the bull Dum sollicita of Pope Julius III . Cardinal Giovanni Marone and the head of the Jesuit Order, Ignatius Loyola, acted as its direct creators. The latter even officially opened it on October 28, 1552, and the first students began their studies in November. Since then, the collegium has been under the tutelage of the Jesuits (a committee of six cardinal protectors ) and after Almo Collegio Capranica It is the oldest among educational institutions of its type.

The first year, subjects were taught by the collegium itself, but already in the fall of 1553 Loyola created schools of philosophy and theology in another Jesuit educational institution - the Roman Collegium . In addition, he first introduced internal rules here, which were then transferred to other similar places.
