History
The grand opening of the men's gymnasium in Novgorod took place on July 9, 1808 . Like most of the gymnasiums that opened then, its basis was the four-year public school that existed since 1786. The gymnasium was originally located in the old building of the public school on Posolskaya Street.
The first teachers of the gymnasium, which were staffed by 8 people, were mainly graduates of theological educational institutions who had completed a special course at the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute . The first director was appointed A. Ya. Makulov, who was soon replaced by N.I. Monkoshov. As N.K. Otto , who headed the gymnasium for about 30 years, wrote, Monkoshev “without pedagogical talents and remaining only an official in the course of his directorship, accurately presented papers and reports; but he could not arouse public trust in the gymnasium ” [1] . Therefore, the gymnasium was extremely small: if in 1809 there were 31 students in the gymnasium, then in 1816 there were only 6 people, and therefore cantonists from the Novgorod military orphan department began to be admitted to it (until 1928), which, however, did not improve significantly position. There were almost noble children: "in 1811 there were two nobles, in 1822 - two, and in 1823 and 24 there was only one."
After the visit of the Minister of Education in 1827, the Novgorod nobility allocated a place for the construction of a new building. However, the construction dragged on for a long time and only in 1838 the gymnasium moved to a new building on Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. The three-story educational building in the style of late classicism was connected by a stone gate with a two-story outbuilding, and in the depths of the plot there was a one-story building of the guesthouse, in which the house church was later opened. In 1839, the number of students amounted to 100 people, including 20 noble boarders.
After the transformation according to the Charter of 1864, the Novgorod male gymnasium began to be called classical. A uniform uniform form was introduced for everyone: a dark green frock coat with black buttons, a cap of the same color with a blue border, a dark tie and dark gray trousers. Since 1871, according to the new “Charter of gymnasiums and gymnasiums”, an eight-year period of study was established and a preparatory class appeared to prepare for studying at the gymnasium. At this time, Anton Arensky studied here.
In 1908, in connection with the centenary, the Novgorod male gymnasium became known as Alexandrovskaya in honor of Emperor Alexander I. At this time, about 400 people studied in it.
In 1918, the gymnasium was closed.
