One layer of a three-dimensional crystal lattice of β-carbon nitride

The substance (as a modification of beta-carbon nitride ) Was first proposed in the works of M. Cohen 1985 and 1989 (the latter in collaboration with E. Liu) [1] . It was suggested that carbon atoms and nitrogen in a ratio of 3: 4 can form particularly short and strong bonds in a stable crystal lattice. According to calculations, this substance can be at least as solid as diamond.

Cohen's research attracted the attention of scientists to carbon nitride, and later several other modifications were predicted: carbon alpha-nitride, pseudo-cubic carbon nitride and graphite-like carbon nitride [2] (it has a structure based on heptazine cycles). Later it was found that, due to its special semiconductor properties, the latter exhibits unusual catalytic activity [3] .

During the last decade of the 20th century, numerous attempts have been made to obtain the above modifications of carbon nitride [4] , as a result of which methods have been developed for producing a substance in the form of thin films (and, therefore, in very small quantities). The complexity of the synthesis is mainly due to the thermal instability of carbon nitride (decomposition temperature 800 ° C) [5] . In 2002, a bulk sample of crystalline carbon nitride (from its amorphous form) was synthesized [6] .

Other classes of compounds of carbon and nitrogen

Fullerene derivatives

  • Azofullerenes is a class of heterofullerenes in which carbon in some positions is replaced by nitrogen.
  • Cyanofullerenes is a class of modified fullerenes with cyano groups attached to the carbon skeleton.

Organic Nitrides

  • Percyano hydrocarbons (C n (CN) m ) are hydrocarbons, all the hydrogens in which are replaced by cyano groups . The simplest representative can be considered a cyan .
  • Hydrocarbons (C n (N 3 ) m ) are hydrocarbons, all of the hydrogens in which are replaced by azide groups.
