The station is located in the southwest of the Japanese island of Hokkaido on the coast of the Sea of Japan near the village of the same name in the district of Siribesi .
The construction of the station began in 1985. Since then, three PWR reactors of the Mitsubishi design with a capacity of 575, 575 and 912 MW, respectively, have been launched [1] . Thus, the total capacity of Tomari NPP is 2062 MW.
The verification at the Tomari station, which began immediately after the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant , showed that the third reactor could be restarted in the very near future. On August 17, 2011, the government approved the decision. However, on May 5, 2012, the reactor was shut down again to check for new safety requirements.
On February 7, 2014, the Japan Atomic Energy Control Commission recognized the third power unit (launched in 2009) as not meeting the new safety requirements for nuclear power plants. In particular, doubt is caused by the emergency cooling system of the reactor. In this regard, it is planned to carry out additional work to eliminate the causes of failure.
It is also planned to inspect the first two reactors of the Tomari NPP.
Incidents
On August 17, 2000, one of the workers fell into a tank with radioactive waste from the reactor, as a result the worker died already in the hospital.
In September 2003, a leak was detected in the steam generator, resulting in 140 liters of radioactive water leaking.
July 2007 was marked by three fires in the utility rooms, another fire occurred in October of the same year. There were no casualties [2] .
