The polevole is shoot-bearing , stolon-forming , or shoot-forming ( Lat. Agróstis stolonífera ), also the white polegone is a perennial loose-leaf cereal , a species of the genus Polevita ( Agrostis ).

Perennial perennial plant with elongated rhizome. It forms numerous overhead shoots, usually rooted in nodes. Stem 15-40 (60-90) cm tall, erect or upright.

The leaves are light green, sometimes grayish or bluish, folded, then flat, 3-10 cm long and 1.5-4 (5) mm wide, linear, pointed at the end, rough on the veins on both sides and on the edges. The tongue is 2.5-3 (6) mm long, notched at the apex, occasionally rounded, filmy, rough on the outside. The vagina is bare; in spring and autumn it is often purple.

Spikelets 1.5-2 (3) mm long, light green or purple, lanceolate to narrow oblong, on legs up to 2 mm long, in a panicle , compressed before and after flowering, and loose during flowering, its branches are rough, in whorls. Flowers , one per spikelet, anthers light yellow, 1-1.5 mm long. Spikelet scales 2-3 mm long, sometimes hardly unequal in length, oblong-lanceolate, membranous, pointed at the end, with one vein, rough on the keel in the upper part. The lower floral scales are no more than 2.5 mm long, oblong-ovate, obtuse at the apex, sometimes with a short awn. The upper floral scales are lanceolate, not more than 1 mm long.

Grain 1-2 mm long, hidden in thin floral scales.

Distribution

Widespread in the temperate regions of Eurasia, the plant. In the Far East - alien.

It is found in floodplain and upland meadows, along river banks, in swamps, and does not tolerate areas without soil moisture.

Value

Valuable feed plant, considered good feed for horses.
