Biography
Born in Persia, in a wealthy noble family. He studied at the Tiflis gymnasium.
He traveled extensively in Persia, Russia and Turkish (Western) Armenia. For some time he worked as a teacher in Armenian public schools in the Caucasus [6] . Raffi's works began to be printed since 1860.
Raffi was a great patriot of his people, in the opinion of the Encyclopedia Britannica, an “ardent nationalist” [6] . In his works, he called on Armenians not to hope for liberation from Turkish rule with the help of Europe and to rely on their own forces.
His works were published in various print media (including in the journal “Mshak”, editor - Prince Grigor Artsruni) and enjoyed great popularity in the enlightened circles of the XIX century Armenian society. Despite his great fame and popularity, Raffi himself lived modestly and died in poverty.
Raffi is buried in Tiflis (Tbilisi), in Khozhavanke , where Hovhannes Tumanyan , Gabriel Sundukyan , Gazaros Aghayan , Perch Proshyan , Muratsan , Tserents, Jivani , Nar-Dos , Grigor Artsruni and others also rest.
Works of Raffi have been translated into many languages of the world, including Russian.
