The early years
George Gekas was born April 14, 1930 in the city of Harrisburg ( Pennsylvania , USA ) in a family of Greeks .
He graduated from William Penn High School in Harrisburg.
In 1952 he graduated from Dickinson College with a bachelor 's degree , where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity (ΣΑΕ).
In 1953 - 1955 served in the U.S. Army .
In 1958, he again graduated from Dickinson College with a doctorate in law (JD).
In 1960 - 1966 , after a short private practice , he worked as an assistant to the district attorney of the Dauphin district .
House of Representatives and Senate of Pennsylvania
In 1966 - 1974 - Member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives from Dauphin County ( 1967 - 1968 ) and from the 103rd constituency ( 1969 - 1974 ). Due to the Watergate scandal , the future mayor of Harrisburg, Stephen R. Reed , who took the place of Gekas, won a landslide victory in the 1974 election.
In 1976 , despite an unexpected defeat, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate and re-elected in 1980 .
U.S. House of Representatives
After the 1980 census , Pennsylvania lost two US congressional districts due to very low population growth. The Republican-controlled state legislature formed the new, heavily Republican- based Harrisbee constituency that targeted Gekas. The latter easily won the election in 1982 and was re-elected nine more times ( 1983 - 2003 ).
George Gekas was one of the most conservative members of the US House of Representatives, which aroused strong sympathy in the district, where Republicans dominated at all levels of government. However, he alienated many Democrats and moderate Republicans in the Harrisburg area with his voting protocols, lack of desire to return federal funds , and a leadership role in the effort to complicate personal bankruptcy status and make it less appropriate. And yet, the constituency was formed in such a way that Gekas never faced any serious competition during his first ten election campaigns , and in 1994 he was even elected without opposition.
In 1999, he participated in a meeting of the US Senate in the Bill Clinton impeachment case.
